To leave a mystery and to excite the imagination - that's what matters for an impressive image. The most mysterious painting by Leonardo da Vinci, Madonna in the Rocks, was commissioned by the Milanese Brotherhood of the Immaculate Conception and was made in two identical versions: one of them is exhibited in the Louvre, the other in the London National Gallery.

In Poul Anderson's science fiction short story "Light", American astronauts land on the moon for the first time and discover footprints. One of the astronauts walks along them and falls into a bluish crater filled with fog. On the rock of the crater, he finds a carved image of a cross. The shocked astronaut recalls the painting "Madonna in the Rocks", with the same light that never shone on earth, cold, pale, indescribably soft, and thinks about who was on the Moon before them.
